Integration Is Key to CRM
Customer relationship management software and other business applications have many
selling points. Flexibility, speed, price, usability and other factors
vary from product to product. Let's consider for a moment, though, the goal of
investing in business softare. That goal is to make more money by helping a business
run more efficiently.
The ability to integrate multiple business processes into a single software product
offers enormous potential to increase efficiency. Imagine having one application that
handles every part of your business - billing, workflow, CRM, logistics, inventory
control, human resources. What if business processes such as these were tied to business
tools (such as e-mail) in one fully-integrated business application?
Many companies like will argue that their products meet these demands. However, even
some of the big players like Microsoft and Oracle have yet to complete the business
software circle. While business technologies have come a long way, there are noticeable
gaps in integration. What's more, security issues between components and from outside threats continue
to plague the industry.
Two critical problems must be solved in order for a fully-integrated business solution to
be realized. First, a universal and standardized protocol for sharing data between applications
must be established and agreed upon. XML may one day serve as this protocol, but that
debate is worth another article. Second, the threat to data security (and integrity) must
be minimized. Stricter laws for electronic infractions, coupled with more robust software
security guidelines will be key pieces of the puzzle here.
While many have tried, no software vendors yet have offered fully integrated, secure
software that meets every business need. The first to do so will probably come to
dominate the software market, but the businesses themselves have the most to gain.
