The simple rule of thumb is, if you work with any confidential information on an internet-connected computer, it is at risk of being compromised. Business data is typically threatened through two avenues - software exploitation and identity theft. Software exploitation happens when hackers find security holes in software that allow them to steal information, send spam, or do other kinds of damage. In many cases poorly designed software becomes the scapegoat for these violations, however, the computer users are often to blame. Software is only as secure as the latest patch makes it, so if you fail to download security patches, you fail to protect your business data. It's that simple. Fortunately, software vendors are continually striving to find the holes in their products and make them easier to upgrade. With a joint effort between user and software developer, this type of security threat can often be minimized. Another way that your electronic business data can be attacked is through identity theft. This is not when someone uses a credit card in your name to buy TVs, but rather when a hacker compromises your access to a computer or system where sensitive information is stored. Often this happens when users choose obvious or simplistic passwords that a clever mind or computer algorithm can recreate. However, the most appalling cases of identity theft take place when users foolishly give out passwords over the phone, via e-mail, or across unsecured internet connections. Once your username and password are compromised, so is your data. The best way to counter this type of threat is to never share your personal or login information with anyone. Also, changing passwords often to include numbers *and* letters will help lock the door. If you remain vigilant, the privacy of your business data faces a lesser risk. |
