1. Start Party Poker or Empire Poker
Start the Party Poker (or Poker Stars) software as you would normally. Log and head to the Texas Hold 'Em tables. In the case of Party Poker, log files are only generated for real money tables so you won't be able to use Poker Mate in the "Play Money" section.

2. Choose a poker table
Choose a poker table to join. Party Poker recently added statistics like hands per hour and average pot to help players find a suitable table. Important: Poker Mate is designed to help you analyze one poker table at a time. Keep that in mind if you play multiple tables.

3. Wait until you post the big blind
Once you have opened up a table of choice, take a set and get ready to win at Party Poker. In most cases you'll have to wait to post the big blind, which is the event that starts the log file on your computer.

4. Start the Poker Mate Program
You should have installed Poker Mate, which means that you can launch the program from your Start Menu or Desktop. Start Poker Mate and position its window in a convenient spot that you can see while playing poker. On some screens you'll have to deal with overlapping windows, which is a nuisance but otherwise okay.

5. Select your current log file
After your first hand you should be able to find the log file that was started by Party Poker or Empire Poker. Look in the Program Files directory under "Party Gaming" or "Poker Stars". If possible, Poker Mate will take you directly to the appropriate folder. Then, choose the folder with today's date and find your table's log file. The table name should match that of your table.

6. View game and player statistics
With a log file to chew on, Poker Mate should be able to pull up some preliminary data about your opponents. Don't worry if you get a "not enough data" message - in such a case, wait until the next hand and repeat the "Choose File" process. As the game goes on you'll have more and more data in the log file for Poker Mate to analyze.

Refresh the log file regularly
To operate efficiently, Poker Mate only re-analyzes the log file when you click the "Refresh" button. Be sure to do this on a regular basis to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information on other poker players. As the amount of information increases, so does the processing time for each log file - so if Poker Mate takes a long time to refresh, perhaps it's time to join another table.
