How to win at poker: three strategies
Online poker, or any poker game for that matter, is a game of skill when played at its highest level. True, everyone is capable of hitting a lucky river card just as they
might be victim to a bad beat. Luck can help anyone win at poker.
However, there are three key strategies that explain why good players will always take the money of bad players in the long run:
For more comprehensive poker strategy, you should see our recommended online poker books.
Education is a key component of becoming a winning poker player, but it takes time. There are also tools that can boost your play right away. Consider buying
the Poker Mate tracking software
which guides you during games on Party Poker or Empire Poker.
Strategy 1: Know your cards
Becoming a good poker player requires both the knowledge of which cards to play, and the discipline to fold anything else. In Hold 'Em your selectivity should take position
into account - you must play tight in late position, tighter in early position, and the tightest when on a blind. In Killer Poker Online John Vorhaus even lays out
the exact cards to play in each position. However, I think this varies from person to person - so make your own grid of starting hands, and stick to it.
Another part of knowing your cards is really counting your cards. I'm not a guru of pot odds, implied odds, etc., but I will say this: at any point in a game, you should
know the approximate chances that certain cards will hit the deck. This is especially important when you're on a draw, or trying to bet against opponents who are on a draw.
In most cases, discipline is how to win at poker - you should recognize situations where the odds are against you,
an inside straight draw being the classic example, and fold appropriately. Simply put, a bit of card counting helps you know how much to bet or when to fold.
Strategy 2: Know your opponents
In the words of JV, "Poker is a people game played with cards, not a card game played with people." The simple truth is this: to make money at poker, you have to win that
money from the stacks of other players. This means studying your opponents, learning how they play, and using that information against them. Knowing the other poker players
has benefits for both building your stack (offense) and protecting it (defense). For example, you might notice that a certain opponent almost always folds in the face of a
re-raise. Punish him. Or, you might observe a player who has mastered the check-raise. When he checks to you, watch out!
Strategy 3: Know yourself
The importance of studying opponents yields an important element in poker: how the other players see you. Every move you make at an online poker table is most likely noted,
catalogued, considered, and stored for future reference. Try to introduce some randomness to your play so that your patterns aren't obvious. Keep in mind also that your
image at the poker table is especially critical. You want to be respected and feared. This means playing aggressively, but smart. Any time that your opponents get to
see your cards, you should wow them. Don't go to a showdown (even a small one) if you're holding under-average cards. That's the sign of a weak player. Instead, fold
those mediocre hands so that you always come out strong at the river.
