is a gadget for iGoogle that displays genes associated with human disease.
Database of Genes and Diseases
The gene associations underlying Gene of the Day are mined from
Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man
(OMIM),
a database of human genes and genetic disorders developed by staff at Johns Hopkins and hosted on the Web by
the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The OMIM database is updated daily with genotype-phenotype
correlations for all known mendelian disorders.
Gene/Disease Categories
Several specific categories of gene-disease associations are available:
- Addiction - Genes related to nicotine, alcoholism, and other addictions
- Autoimmune - Genes associated with lupus and other auto-immune disorders
- Cancer - Inherited and somatic mutations in genes related to cancer
- Cardiovascular - Heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular disorders
- Family traits - Eye color, hair color, handedness, and other inherited traits
- Hearing-related - Deafness and auditory disorders
- Immunity - Resistance and susceptibility to infection
